The 60 Minute Rule

I am not a fan of waiting around in Airports, but there is no escaping waiting for a flight. The two options are landside or airside. I often try to spend as much time landside as possible, keeping time waiting airside to a minimum. Of course if you have the option to wait in a Lounge like the JAL Lounge at Haneda, you take it. Most often I’m not waiting in a lounge, so I have to figure out how long before my flight I need to arrive at the airport.

In Steps The 60 Minute Rule

Many carries have a rule that states they won’t issue a boarding pass if the flight is less than 60 minutes until to departure.

This rule is not hard and fast, but it can be trip stopping if and when the rule is enforced. I have had the rule enforced in my presence on a few occasions, and have even had it enforced on myself multiple times.

There is sometimes the possibility of convincing the enforcer to not enforce the rule, which usually requires a call to their supervisor. Sometimes check-in agents are very willing to help, and other times, they will shut your trip down before it even starts.

Tips That Get You to Your Gate:

  • Always have a smile!
  • Ask kindly and with persistence
  • Pack light – No Checked Bags!
  • Don’t take no for an answer

These tips have really helped when I needed to get on a flight. Although sometimes there is just nothing that can be done once the check in agent decides you’re past the 60 minute rule.

The only real way to beat the rule is to show up early. Still, I’m not a fan of the showing up early bit. Below are some reasons to arrive as close to 60 minute cute off time as possible.

  • More time to enjoy the nation you’re in!
  • Many more food options at better prices
  • There will always be a line at your gate!
